Rats in the city area are on the hook

Niederkassel. The rat population in the city has been successfully contained in recent years. However, reports from concerned citizens have been increasing again in recent months. The rats therefore continue to enjoy a rich supply of food.

Local brown rats and brown rats do not prefer to spend time in the sewage system. They settle where there is enough food and the offspring can be offered safe shelter.

The rats' foraging for food above ground mainly takes place near garbage cans or compost heaps. Composting should be reduced to a minimum, especially in the summer months, so as not to attract annoying rodents into your home garden.

Rinsing out the garbage cans and discharging the resulting waste into the sewer or onto your home lawn is not permitted. Food and feed should also not be stored openly on the property.

To ensure that the rats do not have a source of food in the sewer system, leftover food should be disposed of with household waste and not down the toilet or down the drain. This is the most important step in continuing to control the rat population. This is only possible to a limited extent with the control measures taken by the wastewater works alone.

In order to combat these disease-carrying pests, the sewage works of the city of Niederkassel complies with legal regulations and covers the sewer system with rat bait. The rats are attracted to the bait by different scents. After they have tampered with the bait, they die after a delay of a few days. In the city, the sewer shafts are treated with rat poison and checked. In particularly affected areas, rat bait is regularly added after a period of a few weeks.

The next so-called main occupancy of the shafts will take place from June 10th to 21st and will be carried out by a company commissioned by the wastewater works. The corresponding follow-up checks and occupancies take place three, six and nine weeks after the main occupancy.

In order to support this measure, the wastewater works appeals not to misuse the sewer system as a rubbish bin. In addition, it should be noted that parking on manhole covers is not permitted and is prohibited. Otherwise, rat control cannot be carried out properly.
