Children enjoy reading time with reading mentors

This school year, 146 volunteer reading mentors are giving 193 children and young people in the Hürth primary schools, the secondary school and the comprehensive school an hour of shared reading time each week, thereby promoting the reading joy and reading comprehension of the reading children.

Hurth (me). MENTOR - the reading helpers in the Reading Friends Association Hürth im Löhrerhof - celebrated this proud result of his voluntary commitment together with many reading mentors, the mayor, teachers from the cooperating schools, friends and sponsors.

Margret Schaaf, the project manager, welcomed all the guests and was pleased with them about the good development of the joint commitment, which is a lot of joy for the children and the reading mentors and is an enrichment for everyone.

There are many reasons why additional reading support is necessary. Margret Schaaf picked out an important one. According to a study by the Reading Foundation, 30 percent of families in Germany do not read with preschool children. The mayor cited various studies in his speech.

Around 29 percent of fourth graders do not understand what they read. Half of 15-year-olds don't like reading and almost 20 percent of them read at a primary school level. He then quoted Walt Disney: “There are more treasures in books than pirate booty on a treasure island. And the best thing is, you can enjoy this wealth every day of your life.” The mayor expressed his high appreciation as follows: “Bringing these treasures closer to children and young people enriches their lives forever. I am grateful that reading mentors exist. They are an enrichment for our city.”Stefanie Schütz, head of the Don Bosco School in Efferen and spokesperson for the city primary school conference, thanked the reading mentors on behalf of her colleagues for their great commitment. No teacher has the opportunity to give a child their undivided attention for an hour. This is why the attention of the reading mentors is so valuable for the children. She had interviewed the reading children at the Don Bosco School, all of whom like to go to reading hours and enjoy reading time.

On the question of why reading isn't stupid, Ulla Buse, the chairwoman of the Lesefreunde Hürth, collected statements from reading children and delighted the audience, before Petra Hammesfahr, the well-known author of psychological thrillers, provided excitement and distraction with excerpts from her brand new book .
