Wellness program for the dream lawn

(akz-o). A thick, lush green lawn is every garden owner's dream. But although grass grows almost everywhere, lawns in many places are a picture of misery. The grasses are subjected to heavy strain, mosses develop, wild herbs colonize the areas and matting leads to brown, bare spots. Time to work on the lawn, scarify it, fertilize it and enjoy its growth.

Like a treatment for the lawn

When the grass begins to grow again as temperatures rise, it is the ideal time to start a lawn care program. A suitable fertilizer (Substral) provides the grass with all the necessary nutrients for around 100 days (www.liebedeinengarten.de). About ten days after fertilization, the lawn is visibly greener and has begun to grow. Then it's time for the first cut. Early and regular cutting inhibits wild herbs and promotes growth. The cutting height is crucial: In order to avoid dry damage and the development of wild weeds, a cutting height of around eight centimeters should initially be set. Ideally, the lawn area is now aerated with nail shoes, a hand or motorized scarifier. Scarifying removes dead thatch and stimulates the root growth of the grass. However, this should only be done in dry soil and weather conditions. After scarifying, the area often appears very patchy and bare. Here you should reseed (e.g. Substral scarifying mix). In order for the seeds to germinate reliably, they need sufficient and even moisture in the following weeks. You can mow for the first time after four to six weeks. The optimal cutting height during the summer months is four to six centimeters. The warmer and drier it gets, the less short the lawn should be cut.

Mineral or organic fertilizer?

It is advisable to fertilize the lawn again in the main growth phase in May/June and in preparation for the cold season in autumn. If the soil conditions are sufficiently moist, mineral lawn fertilizer is immediately absorbed by the plants, so that the effect becomes apparent after just a few days. Organic fertilizer must first be mineralized by the microorganisms in the soil. This process depends on the soil temperature and moisture. Organic fertilizer has a slightly delayed effect, but is more sustainable when it comes to its raw materials.
