Solidarity with Ukraine
Bad Godesberg (as). On the eve and night of May 1st, maypoles were set up everywhere. During an action at the Russian Consulate General on Waldstrasse in Bad Godesberg, organizers of the vigil against the war in Ukraine set up a new maypole opposite the Russian Consulate General as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine. The slim maypole was previously decorated with blue and yellow ribbons.
The new maypole replaces the previous maypole, which was vandalized a few days after a large vigil with 80 participants on February 22, 2024, explained Dr. Gunter Taube.
The vigil on February 22nd was held to mark the second anniversary of Russia's attack on Ukraine and to commemorate Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, who was murdered in Russian custody. The initiators of the vigil in February were disappointed that the vigil site, which was decorated with many flowers, photos and protest signs, was vandalized shortly after their day of protest. A maypole that was still standing there from last year was broken, all photos and protest signs were gone, and flowers and other objects were destroyed. However, the wanton destruction by employees or visitors of the Consulate General was observed and reported to the police. The site of the vigil has now been decorated again with flowers, candles and protest signs against the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the new maypole is intended as a “maypole of solidarity” to remind employees and visitors of the Russian Consulate General every day of the war of aggression against Ukraine. The vigil initiative also calls on Russian President Vladimir Putin to immediately end the war in Ukraine and to withdraw all Russian troops from Ukrainian territory, including from Crimea, which was annexed in 2014, and the Luhansk and Donetsk regions occupied since 2015.
