Holiday check for the car
(djd). Germans' desire to travel is unbroken: According to the 2024 travel analysis by the Forschungsgemeinschaft Urlaub und Reisen e. V. total spending on holiday travel last year was at a record level of 87 billion euros. Despite the crises, 73 percent of the population plan to travel in the current year 2024. The classics Spain and Italy are again in first and second place among the dream destinations. A large proportion of European holidaymakers travel to their destination in their own car - this is often cheaper than flying, especially for families with children.
To avoid travel stress and mishaps, it is advisable to do a holiday check well before departure. A master workshop from the motor vehicle guild examines all components that are relevant to safety and comfort.
1. Fluid levels: Check level
Engine oil, coolant and brake fluid as well as windshield washer fluid are checked and, if necessary, topped up or replaced. Diesel vehicles are also topped up with AdBlue.
2. Tires: Inspect condition
Summer tires should have a minimum tread depth of 3 millimeters so that they still have enough reserve for the legally required depth of 1.6 millimeters when on vacation. In addition, they must not show any visible damage and the tire pressure must be correct.
3. Brakes: Inspect pads and discs
The brake pads must be sufficiently thick and the discs must be intact. If there is too little remaining coating, it should be replaced.
4. Good visibility: check lights and windshield wipers
All lamps should be checked for functionality and the range of headlights must be correct. Most modern vehicles display defective lights. To ensure a clear view when it rains, old wiper blades should be replaced in good time.
5. Air conditioning: Check for a cool head
Particularly when traveling south, it is important that the air conditioning is fully functional. An air conditioning check ensures that the coolant level is correct and the compressor is working properly. Disinfection prevents unpleasant odors.
6. Read out error memory: prevents unpleasant surprises
The vehicle workshop reads error codes using an electronic diagnostic device. They can provide information about impending defects. This way you can prevent bigger problems.
7. Emergency equipment: everything important on board?
First-aid kits, warning triangles and safety vests are mandatory in most countries. Also useful: an intact spare wheel or tire puncture kit, fire extinguisher, tow rope and warning light.
