Everything for mom - and of course dad too

(ak-o) In fact, Mother's Day is celebrated almost all over the world. Hardly a corner of the world doesn't know this special day for mothers. In this country, too, mothers receive a lot of attention from their loved ones on this day. The younger children in particular put in a lot of effort for their mothers. People like to tinker as much as they can. The main thing is that mom is happy. And what applies to mom also applies to dad: Father's Day in Germany is celebrated on Ascension Day, this year on May 9th.

Is it all just Consumption?

What most people like to celebrate is spurned by others as a battle of consumerism. It is of course noticeable that retailers record increases in sales in the run-up to Mother's Day. In 2023, more than 900 million euros in event-related sales were generated. The flower trade does particularly well every year. Otherwise, people like to use sweet treats, perfume or jewelry to make the mother of the house happy. But retailers also have something in store for the forgetful. Everything about saying sorry can still be purchased in the week after Mother's Day.

The True Story

But where does Mother’s Day as we know it come from? The current form of Mother's Day can basically be traced back to the early 20th century. On May 12, 1907, Anne Marie Jarvis, who lived in the USA, honored her mother, who had died on that very day two years earlier, with a “Memorial Mother’s Day Meeting”. From then on, similar events were repeated annually. Just seven years later, it even became a national holiday in the United States. In Germany, however, Mother's Day is not a public holiday. It was celebrated for the first time in 1923. Our date is the second Sunday in May. In many other countries - after all, Mother's Day is celebrated in over 100 countries around the world - the day of honor for mothers is celebrated in May.

Little Craft Tip

What we needed: canvas (size to suit your taste), acrylic paint, battery-operated fairy lights (size to match the canvas), glitter, brush, liquid glue and scotch tape.

This is how it's done: Use acrylic paint to paint a motif of your choice on the canvas, for example a beautiful heart, flowers, your own handprint and the words “For Mom” - or of course “For Dad”. There are no limits for your creativity. Make the canvas shine with some glitter dust (mix with a little glue and apply with a brush). Fix the fairy lights on the back with scotch tape. The bright surprise is ready!
